The scent of chlorine hung in the air, a familiar comfort. Alex was gliding through the water, the rhythmic strokes of his arms and legs a meditative practice. He always felt his best in the pool, the weightless embrace a soothing balm. It was a perfect afternoon, a moment of tranquil escape.

He heard his name being called and he swam to the edge, where his friend, Mark, stood, his face unreadable. "I need to tell you something," Mark said, his voice strained. "I'm moving. To New Jersey." Alex felt a wave of icy water wash over him.
